Mount Salkantay Expedition (9D / 8N)

ALTITUDE: 6264 m.
DEGREE: MODERATE - TECKNICAL

The Salkantay is probably the most difficult mountain in the department of Cusco, the location of this mountain near to the jungle do that all the time it is cloudy and the glacier is unstable . this is the reason because the name of this mount is Salkantay that in Quechua means savage or fear mount, for climb it we need to prepare the route on the glacier and take more campsites and porter the climbing equipment and food, no climbers where there in the last 10 years, we don't have route and itinerary recently, but we have experienced climbers and porters of altitude with experience in mountaineering trips. ITINERARY

The itinerary is as follows:

DAY 1: Cusco - km 82 (begin the Inca trail) - Huayllabamba

After four hours driving from Cusco and three hours walking in a good route we'll arrive to Huayllabamba.

DAY 2: Huayllabamba - Sisaypampa base camp -before Palkay Pass (4200m)

We'll walk three hours on a steep route and three more hours are not very steep, in the chance of slope we'll arrive to Pampacahuana where we'll find a big Inca water channel of a one kilometer of leng that conduce the water for the irrigation to the small parcels of lands used to the agriculture in the Sacred Valley of the Incas....Continue walking up we'll arrive to the base of the mount Palkay where we'll instale our base camp.

DAY 3: Base camp - Palkay pass (4800m) - moraine camp - base Camp

This day we will go to the moraine camp to carry climbing equipment and food that we'll use for the following days, we'll looking for a possible way to the first camp, after we'll return to the base camp.

DAY 4: Base camp - first camp - moraine camp

Today all the climbers will move to the moraine camp and continue to the first camp to carry again climbing equipment and food, we'll return to the moraine camp.

DAY 5: Moraine camp - first camp

Today we'll arrive to the first camp early because we have the prepare the route that permit an easy and safe climb from the first camp to the summit. After open the way we'll rest in the moraine camp.

DAY 6: First camp - attemp the summit (6264m) - First camp

Today is our main day, we will have part of the way prepared beffore, this is a adecuate itineray to get the summit We consider 8 hours climbing to the top ( 6264m) and three more hours to descend to the first camp.

DAY 7:Optional reserve day

We think that is necessary to take one day of reserve in case of bad weather condition or tecknical problem.

DAY 8: First camp - base camp

After climb this exceptional mountain we need a good rest, we'll take all day resting.

DAY 9: Base camp - km 82 - Cusco

It is our last day, we'll walk down 6 hours to Piscacucho or km 82 where we'll take our bus to Cusco.
